Cambridge Satchel Company – review

A classic leather satchel will never go out of fashion and the Cambridge Satchel Company have so many styles and colours to choose from.

I was absolutely delighted to unwrap my very own Cambridge Satchel for my birthday two years ago and now my husband has had the same joy for his recent birthday!

Julie Deane and her mother Freda started The Cambridge Satchel Company at their kitchen table back in 2008 and the bags became a huge hit with celebrities like Alexa Chung and Taylor Swift.

Their very first satchel was inspired by traditional British, leather schoolbags from years gone by. The company still make satchels but their collection now includes large and small bags and accessories in lots of sizes and styles with many inspired by bags from the past.

And in 2015 they launched a men’s collection. The Cambridge Satchels are made of dyed genuine leather.

About my Cambridge Satchel

My bag is the 14 inch Magnetic Satchel in Leather – Oxblood which costs £155.00. This bag comes in a choice of colours: oxblood, vintage, black, red and navy.

I love that you can personalise your bag too. You can have initials embossed and a choice of symbols too in a choice of colours: gold, silver or blind. Please note all embossing options do make your purchase non-returnable.

Steve personalised my satchel with my initials and a love heart symbol which look really cute.

This bag is very sturdy yet stiff. It doesn’t bend nor flex and just stays the way it is. The exterior is ultra smooth and it still looks as good as new!

At the back part of the bag, a heat stamp is located at the lower center which ensures that the satchel you have is authentic. The leather has natural markings and the material of the stitch is rope-like.  The colour of the thread used is the same as the colour of the bag too.

The small square at the center of the front of the bag can be used to display pictures, calling cards, etc.

Inside is a small front pocket as well as the larger main section of the bag. You can put small items in this pocket such as your keys, phone, lipbalm, etc. pretty much anything and everything that you always reach for in your bag.

The 14″ satchel also expands a bit. If you bring your laptop with you everyday, you can fit an 10- 11″ laptop inside, but would have to sacrifice some items because in spite of the size, you can’t put too much in it. I have carried my laptop in it but it really doesn’t leave much room for other items.

I like that my bag looks like the classic buckle fastening but it actually has magnetic buckle fastenings which are less fiddly and quicker to use! The long strap is also adjustable and is long enough to wear as a crossover bag and can be shortened to wear comfortably on one shoulder.

About Steve’s briefcase

Steve had been on the lookout for a nice leather bag for work and I thought his recent birthday was the perfect time to treat him. I wrote a special post in honour of his birthday – happy birthday wonderful husband.

I absolutely love my Cambridge satchel so I scoured their website for something suitable for him to use for work.

I finally settled on the Large Briefcase in Saffiano Leather – Oxblood Saffiano which costs £195.00. This particular briefcase comes in a choice of colours: oxblood, black, navy and racing green.

I opted for the classic oxblood colour as I felt it was more Steve. I also personalised it for him with his initials embossed on the bag. It costs £7 per letter to have it embossed but I think it’s worth it.

Fortunately I found a voucher code online which saved me 10 per cent on the purchase.

This bag has details inspired by their Classic Satchel including magnetic closure buckles for easier access when on the go. It is finished with a comfortable rolled handle, interior pocket and detachable shoulder strap, which means this bag is versatile.

Delivery was free and really quick. I received both text message and email updates on my delivery status. You can choose an alternative delivery date or have it dropped off at a number of different shops where you can then go and collect it at a time which suits you.

I wasn’t going to be home during the estimated arrival time so I diverted the delivery to my local Matalan store which I then picked up the following day; at a time which was convenient for me.

Overall thoughts on the Cambridge Satchel Company

I would absolutely recommend the Cambridge Satchel Company. Their products are beautifully made here in Britain with free worldwide delivery for purchases which are more than £100 and you can have it delivered to a local shop at your convenience too (here in the UK).

There are lots of styles to choose from, classic colours and you can personalise your bag.

When you receive your parcel in the post it is well protected in a large cardboard box with big bubble wrap and the bag itself is inside a dustbag for storage and protection.
