The Miners Arms – review

I love catching up with family over good food so we were excited to try the Miners Arms in Medomsley, County Durham.

Steve’s parents came to stay with us either side of a trip to Edinburgh which we bought for them for Christmas and as a thank you they wanted to take us out for a meal.

Although the menu at the Miners Arms isn’t huge, it does offer plenty of variety on the usual pub classics – so there’s fish and chips, curries, burgers and mixed grill as well as pies and vegetarian options too.

I think it’s always good to see a selections of pies – they offer steak and ale, chicken and leek, fish and corned beef.

They also have a brilliant specials board too which is what immediately caught my eye.

The friendly server (who may have been the owner actually) told us that there may be a little wait for our main dishes as the food is cooked to order as everything is made fresh. We didn’t mind as we weren’t in a rush and had lots to chat about.

Their slogan on their Facebook page says:

“We don’t do fast food, we do good food fast.”


What did we eat and drink?

For starters my mother-in-law and I plumped for the classic prawn platter (£5.45) – basically a prawn cocktail with salad and a warm bread roll but it hit the spot and we ate every last bite.

Steve went for the smooth chicken liver and bacon paté (£5.45) with a red onion chutney and warm bread roll. Of course Steve swapped his white roll for my brown one but it was lovely nonetheless.

My father-in-law plumped for the sautéed garlic mushrooms (£5.45) – button mushrooms sautéed in fresh sliced garlic, white wine and double cream served on toasted bread.

Our starters were a great size and the food was delicious. The bar was certainly set for our main courses.

The wait wasn’t too long and before we knew it the piping hot main courses were placed in front of us.

My mother-in-law opted for the classic steak and ale pie (£8.95) from the main menu with boiled potatoes. Whereas the rest of us went rogue and made our choices from the specials menu instead.

After some deliberation Steve went for the pan fried duck breast sat on sautéed potatoes in a plum and ginger jus (12.95) while my father-in-law chose the medallions of beef sat on diced potatoes in a classic Diane sauce (£10.95).

I had the grilled fillets of seabass sat on crushed new potatoes in a prawn butter sauce (£11.95).

We then shared a dish of seasonal vegetables between us.

I think you can tell how good the food is in a restaurant when the chatter stops and is replaced with lots of appreciative moans.

The food at the Miners Arms was quite frankly delicious – hands down one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time.

The steak and ale pie was an actual pie – not served in a dish with a flimsy bit of pastry on top – oh no this was a full on pie; filled to the brim with chunky bits of meat in a thick rich gravy that melted in the mouth (I am told).

The medallions of beef were much the same; very tender melt in the mouth meat. I couldn’t believe the portion sizes.

Steve let me try his duck and it was gorgeous – so tender and juicy.

As for my meal, there were absolutely no complaints from me. The seabass was flaky and delicious. I didn’t expect so many juicy prawns in the sauce but they were really lovely. The sauce was so tasty I just wish I’d saved my bread roll to mop it up! Even the potatoes and accompanying vegetables were perfection. I honestly didn’t want my main course to end.

We asked our compliments to the chef be passed on when our plates were cleared away. After a small rest we decided it would be rude not to have a dessert to finish off the meal.

With very full tummies my father-in-law and I decided to just to go for the ice cream (£2.95) whereas Steve went for the chocolate mint crunch (£4.50) which also came with a scoop of ice cream.

Our ice cream was vanilla flavoured and really creamy and there was plenty of it! I liked the little accompanying chocolate wafer too.

The chocolate mint crunch was the mintiest thing I have ever tasted – mint chocolate Areo and Twiglets within the mix – very nice.

The bill came to just shy of £100 (£98.80) which included our drinks and it was honestly worth every single penny (thank you Steve’s parents).


The verdict

I think it’s obvious what the verdict is from what I’ve said above. The Miners Arms is absolutely worth a visit. I love that there’s so much history packed into the pub – the walls are adorned with pictures of Durham from years-gone-by.

The place is really clean too and you get a really warm welcome.

There’s free parking behind the pub, a small beer garden at the front and super friendly staff inside.

The food is delicious, portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable.

There is something on the menu for most people and we will definitely be paying another visit.
